Breastfeeding is important for babies because breast milk contains most of the nutrients your baby needs for the first 6 months. While the nutrient levels in your diet directly influence some of the nutrients in your breast milk, other nutrients transfer to your breast milk no matter what. In order to simultaneously provide this nutritious breast milk and stay in good health yourself, you have an increased need for nutrients. Therefore, your diet is important not only because of the potential impact on your breast milk but also the possible effects on your own health.

Seafood, meat, fruits and vegetables, nuts and other foods like eggs and oats are important in a healthy diet when breastfeeding. Additionally, you should be cautious when consuming caffeine, alcohol, and cow’s milk. Drinking plenty of water is also important in order to be able to produce enough milk and keep yourself hydrated.
