Lengthy travel has been known to wreak havoc on the mind and body. Contracting a cold or flu-type illness following a long flight can be a commonplace occurrence. A recent clinical trial conducted by two Griffith’s Menzies Health Institute Queensland professors showed that elderberry supplements can afford some relief from these types of symptoms experienced after extensive air travel.
The clinic trial conducted among 312 travelers flying overseas from Australia. One group of trial subjects was given 300 mg capsules of elderberry extract and the other group was given placebo capsules. The results of the trial showed greater reporting of cold or flu symptoms among the placebo group, as well as longer symptom duration reported within this same group of travelers.
The Queensland trial results mimicked those of an earlier experiment that studied the efficacy of an echinacea-elderberry combination therapy shown to be an effective treatment for viral flu symptoms.
