Many people believe that if they exercise, they are allowed to indulge. Unfortunately, more than 60 studies and 9 leading exercise, nutrition, and obesity researchers all suggest that weight loss is more complicated. Increasing exercise alone cannot result in significant weight loss. In fact, reducing calorie intake seems to work better than exercise when trying to lose weight. This is because only a small amount of daily calorie burn comes from exercise.

In the weight loss debate, exercise and diet should never have equal significance. However, even if exercise does not have the kind of impact we expect, a combination of exercise and calorie restriction is still most successful. Additionally, although exercise might not impact weight loss as much as one would hope, there are still important mental and physical health benefits, including a reduced risk of stroke, heart attack, dementia, and Alzheimer’s.
